Grim jobs reports undercuts talk of a recovery

“Grim new jobs report dealt a serious blow to efforts by the White House to convince voters ahead of the November elections that the president’s economic recovery plans were working.
The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased by 12,000 to 500,000 last week, taking economists and the White House by surprise.
President Obama, on his way to a 10-day vacation with his family on Martha’s Vineyard, said the report underscores the need for Congress to act on a bill helping small business.
“There will be plenty of time between now and November to play politics, but the small-business owners I met with this week, the ones that I’ve met with across the country this year, they don’t have time for political games.” Obama said. “They’re not interested in what’s best for a political party, they’re interested in what’s best for the country.”
Procedural tussles and bickering have held up the bill in the Senate, where the measure is expected to come back for a vote when Congress returns from recess next month.
Obama has touted the bill as a jobs package, noting that small businesses account for a significant percentage of jobs in America and need the tax breaks and other incentives to start hiring again.
But Republicans seized on the jobless claims, calling the latest report further proof that Obama’s economic policies aren’t working.

“Gentle readers, it’s time to set the wayback machine to May 12th in the year 2008, where we read the following in a New York Times op-ed page piece written by historian Edward N. Luttwak, of the Center for Strategic and
International Studies.
In Islam, however, there is no such thing as a half-Muslim. Like all monotheistic religions, Islam is an exclusive faith. As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.
Of course, as most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written convincingly to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him. His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim’s family may choose to forgive).
This drew a fierce response from Clark Hoyt, the Times public editor. He said this information was totally, totally, totally wrong and the newspaper should not have printed it.”

“BP has now responded to Admiral Allen’s request for more information, and has obtained permission to replace the BOP and stack on the top of the Deepwater well, before completing the drilling of the relief well. They are also preparing to recover (fish for) the drill pipe that was left in the original well.”

“A few weeks ago, I came across an article in the Atlantic Monthly magazine, which bore the extraordinary title “Did Christianity Cause the Crash?”
I realize that much of the mainstream media is ready to blame Christianity for almost every societal ill, but this seemed a bit much. As I read through the article, it became plain that the culprit, in the author’s mind, is the so-called “prosperity Gospel,” the view propagated by quite a few extremely popular evangelists that material prosperity flows from the depth and quality of one’s faith in God. His argument was that the willingness on the part of many Christians to risk their savings on questionable investments conduced toward the bursting of the housing bubble and the subsequent economic meltdown. Well, I’m not sure that that particular argument carries much weight, but I’ll confess that the article piqued my interest in this influential theology.”

Hannity, Obama’s Muslim Friendly Behavior

“Is President Barak Obama a practicing Muslim in secret or is he a Christian that he says he is?
From what I am seeing, I even have that question myself. If President Barak Obama says he is a Christian, why does he not look for a local Christian church community for fellow purposes? Also so both he and First Lady Michelle Obama can set a GOOD EXAMPLE to both their two daughters. Plus also why is he bending over backwards for the Muslim community? There is just simply too many questions to ask here in this brief blog article.
It would though be nice if President Obama reaches out to Christians, say those who are members of a Greek Orthodox church that still has not be rebuilt as of yet and had a major setback this week with talks having broken down this week with NYC Port Authority people.

Memories,
I hope you don’t mind this posting?
In the ‘Olden Days”
I sure do remember how much I loved getting into bed when the sheets were just washed & dried
on the line. I loved the cool crispness & clean smell. I really miss that. They sure can’t make a
fabric softener that even comes close to that smell.
Karen
THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:
You have to be a certain age to appreciate this. I can hear my mother now….
(if you don’ t know what clotheslines are, better skip this)
1. You had to wash the clothes line before hanging any clothes-
walk the entire lengths of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
2. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang “whites”
with “whites,” and hang them first.
3. You never hung a shirt by the shoulders – always by the tail!
What would the neighbors think?
4. Wash day on a Monday! . . . Never hang clothes on the weekend, or
Sunday, for Heaven’ s sake!
5. Hang the sheets and towels on the outside lines so you could hide your
“unmentionables” in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y’ know!)
6. It didn’ t matter if it was sub zero weather . . . Clothes would
“freeze-dry.”
7. Always gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left
on the lines were “tacky!”
8. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did
not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next
washed item.
9. Clothes off the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes
basket, and ready to be ironed.
10. IRONED?! Well, that ‘ s a whole other subject!
A POEM
A clothesline was a news forecast
To neighbors passing by.
There were no secrets you could keep
When clothes were hung to dry.
It also was a friendly link
For neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by
To spend a night or two.
For then you’ d see the “fancy sheets”
And towels upon the line;
You’ d see the “company table cloths”
With intricate designs.
The line announced a baby’ s birth
From folks who lived inside -
As brand new infant clothes were hung,
So carefully with pride!
The ages of the children could
So readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed,
You’ d know how much they’ d grown!
It also told when illness struck,
As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe, too,
Haphazardly were strung.
It also said, “Gone on vacation now”
When lines hung limp and bare.
It told, “We ‘ re back!” when full lines sagged
With not an inch to spare!
New folks in town were scorned upon
If wash was dingy and gray,
As neighbors carefully raised their brows,
And looked the other way . . …
But clotheslines now are of the past,
For dryers make work much less.
Now what goes on inside a home
Is anybody’ s guess!
I really miss that way of life.
It was a friendly sign
When neighbors knew each other best
By what hung on the line!
